APAM Celebrates Holiday Season and Award Winning Teams

On December 10th, the association hosted their Holiday Banquet and the presentation of the APAM / MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University. It was a very special evening as we celebrated the 33rd anniversary of our Asphalt Paving Awards Program.

Over 250 people braved the weather and enjoyed the festivities including representatives from MDOT, APAM members, local agencies and consultants. The evening was filled with frosty beverages, good food and great conversation as industry partners celebrated the upcoming Holiday Season and the honored the award winning teams.

The evening's program began with Executive Director John Becsey welcoming the attendees and introducing special guests.

MDOT's Chief Operations Officer, Greg Johnson offered opening remarks on the successes of MDOT's partnership with the industry and the importance of the APAM/ MDOT Paving Awards.

Then, Jim Klett, NAPA State Director, presented framed certificates to the representatives from 39 HMA plants that qualified for a NAPA Diamond Achievement Commendation. New this year, the NAPA Diamond Quality Commendation qualified 12 APAM member plants for this award. (click here to see both lists)

APAM scholarship award winners were recognized by Scholarship Committee member Aaron White (Click here to see more information on this year's winners).

And to complete the festivities, Chuck Mills announced the winners of the 2009 APAM /MDOT Asphalt Paving Awards as the plagues were presented by MDOT's Greg Johnson and APAM President Andy Schmidt.

For 2009, a total of 56 projects were evaluated in 10 different award categories. The judging committee visited each of the nominated projects, traveling about 4765 miles in 12 days. Each project was rated on a scale of 1-10 in the following nine quality areas: Appearance, Ride, Texture Uniformity, Longitudinal and Transverse Joints, Edges, Utility Cover Adjustments and Degree of Difficulty.

Congratulations to the all of the people who worked on the 17 projects that received these coveted awards for 2009.

APAM Announces Officers and Directors for 2010

Elections were held at the Annual Meeting of the Members on December 10th. The following will serve as your new Officers and Directors for 2010:

The Institute for Construction Education and Training at Ferris State University has announced its program offerings and schedules for 2010 which include training and /or certification /recertification in the following areas:

2010 MICHIGAN BITUMINOUS QC/QA TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The 4 day Michigan Bituminous QC/QA Technician Certification Program is a comprehensive testing process to verify the qualifications of individuals involved with quality control or quality assurance testing. It is mandatory that all persons involved in testing on Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) OR Percent Within Limits (PWL) bituminous contracts with Federal Aid be qualified by this program.

Mix Design Certification Training Offered

The 2010 MDOT Certification Training for Superpave Asphalt Mix Designers will be held on March 15-18, 2009 in Lansing.

All asphalt mix designers who submit HMA mix designs to MDOT must be certified through this class.
