    APAM Launches New Website

APAM has just launched a new website that is focused on the versatility and benefits of asphalt pavements. It has information on ultra-thin and perpetual pavements, rubblization, life cycle cost and driveways! There is also information for the membership - MDOT specifications, dates for upcoming events and a photo album of award winning projects and much more! You should have received a welcome email giving you a password and user name to the protected areas a couple days ago. This will get you into the Members Area of the website where you will be able to update your info. Please email Debi if you have any questions about this process or about anything on the website.

MDOT Plans No Changes to Modified Binder Grades

On July 22nd, a meeting with MDOT and Industry representatives was held to discuss the current situation with the supply of SBS polymer modified binders. Discussion topics included the reasons for SBS shortages around the country, other types of modifiers available as alternatives to SBS, and MDOT's Binder Selection Guidelines.

Recently, MDOT's Pavement Operations Engineer Steve Palmer notified APAM that, after considering all of the information, MDOT has decided to make no changes related to the specification and use of SBS polymer modified binders at this time. The Department will continue to let projects as designed and scheduled, and will be closely monitoring HMA bid prices and binder supply.

MDOT to Pilot New Dense Graded Aggregate Special Provision

In July, a new special provision for Dense-Graded Aggregate was approved for use in 2009. The new special provision was drafted by representatives from MDOT and the industry associations.

According to Mike Eacker, MDOT's Pavement Design Engineer, the Department is in the process of identifying about 6 projects for piloting the new spec in 2009. The SP requires that "the Contractor will make allowance for and be solely responsible for degradation and segregation during shipment, placement and compaction of the dense-graded material." The specification includes Pay Adjustments Factors for failure to meet gradation, loss by wash and Percent Crushed.
