MDOT Wins Recognition for Two Highway Projects

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has won recognition at the regional level, for projects, in the America's Top Transportation Awards competition jointly sponsored the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

MDOT took top honors for the M-115 Clare County Improvement Project in the Innovative Management, Small Project category. Using a $1 million "Highways for Life" safety grant from the Federal Highway Administration, MDOT upgraded a 5.5-mile section of M-115. The project was designed to promote innovative techniques in construction and as a result, was completed 20 days ahead of schedule in October 2008. The completed project has significantly improved pavement condition and safety along this rural two-lane state road from Lake Station Avenue to the Oscela/Clare county line.

Among the contractor innovations were the use of self-adjusting temporary signals, temporary object makers to eliminate runoffs, use of pre-cast bridge construction, and substituting joint repairs with rubblizing the underlying concrete pavement. To eliminate delays, 24-hours roadside service within the construction zone was provided. No workers were injured during the project, and traffic delays averaged two minutes, 16 seconds, much lower than anticipated. Overall, the completed project significantly improved pavement conditions and safely along the rural road.

MDOT was also honored as the winner in the On Time, Medium Project category for rebuilding and widening I- 94 from west of US-131 to east of Oakland Drive in Kalamazoo County.

The MDOT awards were announced July 15 at AASHTO's Annual Mississippi Valley Conference in Grand Rapids. After winning at the regional level, the two MDOT projects are eligible to compete for the America's Transportation Awards Grand Prize that will be presented at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in California in October.

The Smooth Road
MVC

John Becsey, APAM's Executive Director, and Chuck Mills, APAM's Director of Engineering, attended the 2009 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Mississippi Valley is one of the four regional AASHTO groups. It consists of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. The conference was held July 14th - 17th in Grand Rapids. This was the 100th year anniversary of the MVC and Kirk Steudle, MDOT's Director is the President of the MVC. APAM participated in this event by being both an event sponsor and an exhibitor. There were over 350 attendees at this event, which focused on innovative approaches to the challenges facing transportation today.

The old Michigan Contractor and Builder magazine, which went out of print at the beginning of this year, has been picked up by another publisher and they are looking for job stories to feature. Chuck has passed along a couple of possible stories so far, one highlighting the benefits of paving at night and a porous HMA parking lot at MSU. If you have any ideas for possible articles, please pass them along to Chuck.

You will take away:

  • Value of RAP when used in asphalt pavements
  • Impact of RAP on the environment
  • Performance of mixes containing RAP
  • Best practices for mix design and processing RAP
